The Power of Connectedness Found at Broome Hut

Emerald Connection September 24, 2024

Earlier this month, the eighth-grade class, led by Sophie Coolidge and me, packed our gear and hiked to Broome Hut, nestled in the Second Creek Basin on the west side of Berthoud Pass. At 11,350 feet, we arrived at a beautiful high-altitude retreat. After lightening our loads at the hut and grabbing a snack, we set off for a hike to the ridgeline, hoping to catch the sunset. A few students and I pushed on to the summit, where we were rewarded with stunning views of the backside of Mary Jane ski area and a striking aqua-blue alpine lake.

On the way back down, we took a moment to enjoy the remaining patches of snow. Lander, an eighth grader inspired by the summer reading book Braiding Sweetgrass, initiated a spontaneous gratitude ceremony. We passed around a rock, each sharing something we were grateful for, then placed the rock on an existing cairn.

That evening, we enjoyed tacos, played guitar, games of hacky sack, and countless rounds of the ring toss game. We ended the night with a hilarious round of charades. Broome Hut was the perfect setting for the group to set intentions for the year. Immersed in nature and one another’s company, it was a refreshing and grounding way to kick off the school year, providing meaningful moments of connection.

On our hike out the next morning, we took a 20-minute solitude walk to calm the giggles and reflect on the past 24 hours. During the car ride home, students eagerly shared their highlights: Gabe and Grayson felt strong on the summit, Piper loved staying up late and playing guitar, Ella enjoyed the ring toss with the whole class, and Jack’s favorite part was his peaceful solitude by the alpine creek.

My favorite moment was stepping outside during the students’ free time to find the entire class sitting together on a sunny rock overlooking a mountain stream. It was a perfect reflection of the SMS core principle—the power of connectedness and the bond shared by the class of 2029.
