Costa Rica Reflection by Harper, 7th Grade

Emerald Connection, May 9th, 2022

Two weeks ago, the 7-8 class took a nine-day trip to Costa Rica with the World Leadership School. We stayed at the Chilamate Rainforest Eco Retreat, located near Sarapiqui. We dove into culture and played around with our Spanish abilities, making sure to learn from the experiences we encountered. Several people gave us advice, and we made memories that will stick with us. For example, an all-organic local farmer, Daniel, who is more interested in cooperation than competition, taught us how to make the compost that he uses to grow his produce. His wonderful wife also made a delicious lunch, and his six-year-old grandson, Josue, played soccer with the class. We also helped on a different farm to make a trail for a woman who was struggling to take care of her ill husband by herself. The class worked really well together and finished in an hour what would’ve taken the woman a week to complete. While we were there, we also saw a sloth, and it was absolutely adorable. We walked away with a wider Spanish vocabulary and new relationships. During the trip, we each contributed to a blog of our specific adventures. Check it out here.
