Building Trust and Joy Through Routine

Emerald Connection September 10, 2024

It is with great excitement and joy that we welcome our students back for the 2024-2025 school year! The first weeks of school always bring an air of enthusiasm as hallways fill with laughter, classrooms brim with curiosity, and friendships are rekindled. This year, the excitement is palpable as we open our doors to eager learners, ready to embark on new adventures. In the first days of school, classroom discussions were filled with past experiences—lake time with family, jumping on trampolines with friends, and enjoying long, sunny days, carefree and light. These summer highlights were shared during Morning Meeting, an important routine that began on the K-5 Fall Camp Trip.

Starting the year with strong expectations and routines is important in all grade levels. We know that routine is essential for children because it provides structure, stability, and a sense of security, helping them feel safe and trust the adults who provide it. For our lower school students, each day begins with a Morning Meeting, a daily gathering that helps build a positive classroom community and set the tone for the day. Students start the meeting with greetings, improving communication and showing respect to their classmates. We then have an opportunity to share—sometimes highlights from the weekend, other times identifying our emotions and where we are on the mood meter. Finally, we end our meetings with a quick game that creates a sense of belonging and joy. This is the students’ favorite part and always generates a wave of excitement throughout the hallways as each class chooses its game for the day. There are games like “Nothing, Nothing, Something,” which help us think outside the box and spark creativity; there are mindful games that help us focus our attention; and then there are some favorites like “Night at the Museum” and “Beat Master.” All of these games help bring light and joy into our classrooms before we dive into our learning targets for the day.

The Morning Meeting is one of the lower school’s most important routines established in the first weeks of school. It helps create a classroom culture that will nourish and grow our students’ minds throughout the year. We look forward to making this year one filled with joy, trust, growth, and unforgettable memories.
