For their most recent middle school fall trip, the 7th-grade class ventured to Denver for two days of viewing public art and exploring the urban environment. The group departed on Wednesday and returned on Thursday, but they managed to pack plenty of activities into the short trip. Overall, the experience brought the class closer together, and students gathered inspiration for future art projects.

The group enjoyed an art walk through the River North Arts District, known as “RiNo,” where they viewed murals, graffiti, scrap metal sculptures, and much more. Despite the Denver heat, they came away with positive outlooks and insightful observations on the role of public art, noting the “unique and different feelings” each piece of artwork evoked, as described by 7th grader Genevieve.

Beyond the art walk, the group participated in a range of outdoor activities that reminded them of life back home in Steamboat Springs. Activities such as playing frisbee in the yard after breakfast and hiking in Golden Gate Canyon State Park kept the group moving and provided a balance to the busy city experience. During their post-trip reflections, many 7th graders highlighted their visit to the botanic gardens, where they enjoyed the plants, waterfalls, and fish pond, while contemplating the garden as a form of natural art. The full days of activities eventually caught up with the group, and some opted to nap in the gardens during their break.

The group’s favorite meal took place at a food hall offering a wide variety of foods from diverse cultures. Each student was given a budget and had to work together to figure out taxes, tipping, and combining funds to stretch the budget for the best possible meal. Some opted to pool their money and buy a pizza, which included watching the chef toss the pizza dough, spinning it overhead to prepare it. Others enjoyed New Zealand-style ice cream for dessert, which blends vanilla ice cream with fresh fruit.

The 7th graders returned to Steamboat Springs on Thursday afternoon, excited to share their stories and reflect on the artwork they had seen. The trip brought the group closer together, fostering a stronger sense of community that proudly represents Steamboat Mountain School.
