From Seeds to Stories: Second Graders as Grow as Writers

Emerald October 22, 2024

Second graders at SMS have been working hard and having fun building their writing and storytelling skills recently. The writing process is full of both challenges and opportunities for joy, as the students move from generating ideas to creating rough drafts, revising their work, and eventually producing final copies. Each student began with a “seed,” a small, true moment from their life, and then built a story that grew into a full “watermelon.” Over the course of a few weeks, students repeated the process of writing rough drafts, then worked to edit and improve their work through conversations with teachers and personal reflection. This past week, they were all proud to publish their final copies, which will be added to their student portfolios. Throughout the year, students will continue to add final copies of writing projects to their portfolios, creating a showcase of their growth and learning.

While one part of writing is the process of drafting, editing, and revising to produce a final copy, another integral skill the second graders are honing is their handwriting. To begin the year, students had to pass a handwriting “test” in order to move on to cursive. They are excited to be practicing this new skill, learning two new letters each week, with each lesson building on the previous one. This week, the second graders are learning the “swing up” letters, such as “p” and “t.” Learning cursive is an excellent way to develop their fine motor skills while mastering a new and challenging skill. The second grade at Emerald is proving to be a wonderful class of writers, storytellers, and capable, curious learners!
