Admissions Process Overview
Applying to Steamboat Mountain School includes four key steps.
Schedule Your Visit & Interview
During your visit, families can experience campus life, meet faculty and students, and learn more about the academic and experiential learning opportunities available at SMS.
Requirements:
- Grades K-8
An in-person campus visit is required. - Grades 9–12
All upper school applicants are required to have an interview, but they can be scheduled virtually.
Complete the Online Application
Submit the online admissions application, including general student information and grade-level questions.
Families may:
- Begin the application at any time
- Save progress
- Return later to complete submission
- Pay application fee
Submit Recommendations & Supporting Materials
Recommendation forms provide valuable insight into each student’s academic experience, character, and readiness for the SMS learning environment.
Required Materials:
- Teacher recommendations
- School administrator recommendations
- Recent standardized testing
- Recent graded essay (Grades 9-12 only)
Confirm Completion
Your application is considered complete once all required materials and forms have been submitted, including the application fee.
Applications submitted after the priority deadline may still be considered on a rolling basis depending on availability.

Application Deadlines & Important Dates
February 8 — Priority Application Deadline
Complete all admissions steps by February 8 for priority consideration. Applications submitted after this date are reviewed on a rolling basis as space allows.
February 8 — Flexible Tuition Deadline
Families applying for Flexible Tuition should complete the Clarity application by February 8. We encourage families from all financial backgrounds to explore SMS regardless of financial circumstances.
Late February & March — Admissions Decisions
- Grades 1–12 admissions decisions are released in early March
- Kindergarten admission decisions are released in Late February
- All flexible tuition numbers will be included in your enrollment agreement in partnership with Clarity

Admission FAQs
Is a campus visit required?
Yes. SMS accepts rolling applications after our February deadline as space allows.
Is a campus visit required?
- Students in grade K-8 are required to spend time in the classroom of their current grade.
- Grades 9-12 applicants are strongly encouraged to visit campus, though virtual interviews are available when necessary.
Does SMS offer financial assistance?
- Yes. Approximately 35-40% qualify for and receive for Flexible Tuition support.
We encourage families from all financial backgrounds to apply and learn more about available tuition assistance opportunities.
Are scholarships available?
- Yes, SMS offers merit scholarship opportunities for students in grade 9-12. Scholarships are also available for Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club athletes.
