Building A Classroom Charter

By: Emma Griffin

This week, 2nd graders worked together to create a Classroom Charter as part of our RULER social-emotional learning curriculum. Students began by brainstorming a long list of words that describe how they want to feel at school. After thoughtful discussion and a class vote, they narrowed the list down to five core feelings: Joyful, Included, Respected, Focused, and Mindful.

These words represent not only how they want to feel each day, but also how they hope to make others feel—both in our classroom and throughout the school community.

The students’ final step was reflecting on how to bring these words to life during class time, at recess, and during lunch. To keep our commitments front of mind, the class created a poster of the charter that will hang in the classroom as a daily reminder.
