Resilience, Science, and Adventure

7th Grade Fall Trip to RMBL

This September, Steamboat Mountain School middle schoolers embarked on a week-long adventure at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL), a trip that brought science to life and strengthened our sense of community.

Despite unexpected itinerary changes, our students showed resilience, teamwork, and curiosity throughout the week. From field research to campfire connections, the trip laid a foundation for their science studies this year.

At RMBL, students explored active research on marmots, hummingbirds, avalanches, aspens, and geology. They met scientists who generously shared their knowledge and inspired endless student questions—from “Do marmots have friends?” to “How can I help?” These inquiries reflected not only curiosity, but also a genuine eagerness to engage in hands-on learning.

The trip was also a powerful lesson in community. Students supported each other through challenges, from packing up camp under a flash flood warning to cooking, cleaning, and carrying gear together. Acts of kindness and teamwork were constant themes.

We’re deeply grateful to our dedicated teachers, co-leaders, RMBL staff, and generous families who made this experience possible. Their support ensured that our students could learn, grow, and thrive in a truly unique setting.

This week at RMBL captured the essence of a Steamboat Mountain School education: rigorous academics, outdoor adventure, and a supportive community where students build resilience and discover the joy of learning. We’re excited to carry these lessons into the classroom and look forward to many more adventures ahead.
