Mountain Connection, September 4, 2025

At Steamboat Mountain School, the year begins not in a classroom, but on a trail. Orientation Expedition is more than a trip into the mountains—it’s the start of a journey in community, challenge, and joy. Each year, students shoulder packs, lace up boots, and head into the wilderness.

This year’s expedition was a reminder of what makes SMS unique: the combination of academics, personal growth, and authentic connection to the natural world, rain or shine. Students hiked through alpine meadows, encountered wildlife, crossed streams, lit wet stoves, set up tents in the rain, and climbed peaks together.

Our theme this year is excellence in joy, and that theme carried our students and staff throughout the expedition. Joy in the laughter shared at the campsite after a long day of hiking. Joy in the quiet awe of a starry, clear night. Joy in realizing that challenges—whether carrying a heavy pack or pushing through nerves in a new group—can lead to confidence and delight.

Excellence, at SMS, doesn’t come only from striving for grades or bagging peaks. It comes from learning how to live fully and responsibly in a community and how to show up for others through expedition behavior. On this trip, our students also discovered joy in both the hard and the simple moments.

As students returned from the backcountry and settled into the classroom this week, the energy was undeniable: tired legs paired with a deeper understanding of themselves and each other. The mountains gave them space to explore and reflect on the kind of excellence that comes from being an SMS student and the education that is possible when challenge meets joy.
